That was the burning question on everyone's mind at a packed room full of 150 Sellinger Scholars at the business school at Loyola University Maryland on Friday, September 5, 2025.

The provocative panel brought together thought leaders from business, education and technology to explore the evolving role of artificial intelligence in university classrooms, workplaces and daily lives.

For the 150 students in the room, the real question was about how AI would impact the value of their degree and specifically, their jobs prospects upon graduation.

GapWell's co-founder Seth Kessler was invited to share his perspective on how AI will impact the job outlook for the students in the room.

Ultimately, Kessler's message to the students was very clear and optimistic on their career outlook:

  • The current disruption in the marketplace will lead to opportunities for those who are willing to put the work in.

  • Hitting "submit" on hundreds of job postings on Handshake, Indeed or LinkedIn is NOT a proactive job search strategy that will serve you well during or after college.

  • Mediocrity will not get you a job. AI will make you more efficient, but you need to aim higher to achieve your short- and long-term goals.

While AI will definitely disrupt the status quo (as it already has), it will never replace all college-educated adults who surround themselves with powerful professional networks, possess excellent listening skills and maintain the ability to critically think. Mediocrity need not apply.

In terms of AI, stop worrying about what you can't control and focus on what you CAN control ... preparation, managing expectations, interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, personal drive and commitment. I'm not worried about the 'rock stars' in this room. If you underpromise and overdeliver, you will stand out in the crowded marketplace. The students who are hungriest will not only survive, but thrive on their path forward.

Kessler, speaking at "Beyond the Algorithm: Human Insight in the AI World" at Loyola University, September 5, 2025

During the engaging Q& A after the panel discussion, one astute Loyola honors student referenced AI as his "calculator," a tool that helps him achieve his goals, but does not replace his strategic thinking, people skills or other soft skills that help him stand out in the classroom and in the real world.
